1. Havencraft

Havencraft has come in first place once again in usage, ahead by 6% over the 2nd place, Swordcraft. The popularity of Tenko decks have been relatively constant (slight drop, in fact) since the release of the new expansion, but Lion decks have been increasing in popularity. The Tenko variant has a better win percentage overall, as well as have more positive match-ups than its Lion counterpart. However, when the two deck go head-to-head, the Lion deck usually comes out on top.

Based on data, the Lion deck appears to struggle against aggressive decks, such as Aggro Forestcraft, Aggro Swordcraft, and Puppet Portalcraft. In comparison, the Tenko deck does not have much losing match-ups (that’s why it’s popular!). If anything, the Lion variant seems to fair a bit better against control decks that have difficulty dealing with followers being lined up every turn. As evidence, Lion decks fair well against G.Chimera and Reanimate Shadowcraft, but not Dragoncraft.

Finally, it is important to note that both variants have a positive win rate against Midrange Swordcraft, which is undoubtedly the most popular deck this week. This is most likely attributed to Havencraft’s strong follower removal capabilities.

2. Swordcraft

Swordcraft was second in popularity but took the spot of highest win percentage this week. Swordcraft has struggled slightly last week due to the overwhelming popularity of Tenko Havencraft, but is now making a comeback as other decks are increasing in popularity, as well as Swordcraft fans learning the Tenko match-up. Two variants of Swordcraft are currently seen, although Midrange variants are used much more (more than 10 times the usage).

As always, the Aggro version is extremely competent in running over slow-start decks, such as G. Chimera and Ramp Dragoncraft. However, it seemed to struggle against midrange decks, such as Puppets, Forestcraft archetypes, and Midrange Shadowcraft (Lady Grey and Ceres) that offer great board control cards.

The Midrange version of the deck had only three losing match-ups, which were the two Havencraft archetypes and Artifact Portalcraft, which it historically struggled with. However, the win rate is very close to even, proving that Midrange Swordcraft is an extremely versatile deck that can go up against any deck in the format. Another positive for this deck is that the win percentage vs. Ramp Dragoncraft, G. Chimera, and Forestcraft archetypes has gone up. The deck has historically have gone positive against these decks, but the gap is even further, most likely due to the addition of another damage nullifier, Charlotta, Tiny Justice, as well as new ways to finish the game, through Dragon Knights and Zeta, Crimson Lancer.

Portalcraft was the third most popular class this week, coming in 4th overall for win percentage. Since the release of the Brigade of the Sky expansion, we have seen two main archetypes for this class being represented: Puppets and Artifacts. Artifacts have been in the meta since the previous set, but they have not received major game-changing additions from the recent set, and thus have seen a decline in play. Puppets, on the other hand, was lackluster prior to the current set and has seen an explosive increase in play in the past two weeks.

In a head-to-head matchup between the two archetypes, data shows that Puppets have a large advantage over its counterpart. The addition of Silva, Ardent Sniper seems to play a big role, allowing the deck to deal a lot of leader damage, making the finishing play by Orchis, Puppet Girl and Vengeful Puppeteer Noah that much easier. The problem is compounded further by the lack of healing cards in Artifact decks, as well as the time/turns needed for setting up big plays.

The Artifact variant does not have many positive matchups in the current meta, but it holds a positive record against the two of the most popular decks this week: Midrange Swordcraft and Lion Havencraft. This is understandable, since Artifact decks always had a good matchup against midrange, follower-based decks. Against Midrange Swordcraft specifically, being able to destroy followers without having to rely on ‘damage effects’ is a big plus. In general, Artifact Portalcraft does not do so well against decks that almost certainly tries to finish the opponent off before turn 10, which make up most of the other decks in the current meta.

Puppet Portalcraft is faring much better currently, having positive win rates against all but three decks. Unfortunately, though, the three losing matchups are all extremely relevant and popular decks in the current meta. Portalcraft, in general, does not do well against Forestcraft due to its speed and Wood of Brambles. Against Midrange Swordcraft, Puppets can get reliant on Silva for damage and finishing the game becomes difficult because of the numerous Ward followers on the opposing side. Finally, against Tenko, the damage dealt by Silva becomes irrelevant due to the constant healing and the shrine is able to deal a lot of damage due to weak board presence of the Puppet archetype.
